Remembering A Legend: Whitney Houston 1963-2012

By now, news of the death of vocal goddess Whitney Houston has shocked the world. Yesterday at about 4:00 pm pacific time, the woman and voice that inspired all of us was pronounced dead at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The cause of death is yet unknown, though many sources say it could be a few weeks before the coroner makes a final determination.

I know most people will say that, though saddened by her death, we didn’t know her personally. For me, it wasn’t about knowing her personally. Her music inspired me to take the path in life that I have taken. Though it is not my primary career, singing has been a big part of who I am since I was in nappies (diapers for the American readers). I used to dig through my mum’s albums/tapes when I was small. One day I uncovered the 1985 album, Whitney Houston. I was hooked and changed musically forever.

Inspiration aside, you always know that things like this, like death, are going to happen. Hell, nobody gets out of this life alive. But it is nonetheless shocking and emotional. Especially when it comes to the deaths of people like Etta James, Whitney Houston, and Michael Jackson. These were the people that helped to shape the world of music as we know it. Sure they may have had tumultuous ups and downs, but they were still voices that the world could not and would not ignore. For they *made* music.

There are people that may read this and say that I’m a half-wit that is taking this a bit far, but whatever. I have been a fan of Whitney since I can remember. She was an idol to me; in both the good and bad times throughout her life and my own. Yes, she was one of my idols.

With a heavy heart I say, Rest In Peace Ms. Houston. Your talent and that voice will be greatly missed. We will ALWAYS love you!
